Old Soul – “Small Batch”

Name: Old Soul – “Small Batch”

Color: Light Brown

Nose: Corn, malt, oak, rye spices

Taste: Corn, oak, citrus, vanilla cream, white pepper finish

Cathead Distillery was founded in 2010 and is based in Jackson, Mississippi. This expression is their “Small Batch” and rounds out the three bottles Cathead sent me for review.  Small Batch has a mash bill of 75% corn, 21% rye, and 4% malted barley. It is non- aged stated, unfiltered/uncut, no color added, and bottled at 45% abv (90 proof).

Small Batch has the lightest body and chew of the three I have sampled, however, the other two are well over 100 proof. This whiskey has a very nice balance and is easy to sip, but does not have a complex flavor profile. I do not think that was the goal with this expression as it is priced to drink. The corn/malt flavors with a touch spice rye and the vanilla cream finish make this whiskey and easy sipper. I would not recommend this as a mixer for cocktails.

I am very thankful to Cathead for these bottles to sample. On my next trip to Scotland to see the family I will be bringing Cathead whiskey as it in a league of its own and not easily available to my cousins across the pond. They will be thrilled to try this high quality Mississippi whiskey!

Other Expressions: Cathead Original Vodka, Cathead Honeysuckle Vodka, Cathead Satsuma Mandarin Vodka, Cathead Raspberry Vodka, Bristow Gin, Hoodoo Chicory Liquor, and Old Soul Bourbon Whiskey, Cathead Sparkling, and canned cocktails.

Priced around $45+ and well worth the price as the baseline entry whiskey to an excellent series of expressions
