Crown Royal Apple

Name: Crown Royal Apple

Color: Brown

Nose: Chemical apple, no crown royal notes

Taste: Chemical sweet apple, touch of crown

Holy fucking shit, this stuff awful! From the moment I opened the little nip bottle I could only smell chemicals and candy apples. I did not want to taste this stuff, but I did. This shit is just as bad, if not worse, than Jim Beam Apple. (My first opening statement draft was less strong.)

Crown Royal Apple is a liqueur, not a liquor so do not expect much for whiskey taste. If you are not familiar, a liqueur is a distilled spirit but is usually much sweeter than a liquor. They are usually lower in proof. Basically, they are an additive to a cocktail.

Crown Royal Apple may go well with a specialized mixed drink, but I would rather drink water. You are basically drinking chemicals with this stuff. It also appears to be popular with the college students on Instagram. I can’t fault them for bad taste, I used to keep Goldschlager in my dorm room in the 1990’s.

Priced around $35 and tastes like shit.

Crown Royal & 007

Name: Crown Royal

Color: Amber

Nose: Light vanilla and grain bread

Taste: Vanilla and sweetness of honey with a balance that is airy and does not have any burn on the finish

Review:

Crown Royal is a great whiskey from Canada where the whiskeys are known to be lighter in taste and body. You may think “Crown and Coke” when you think of this whiskey but you should not damage good whiskey with flavored sugar water but drink it they way you like it. The shape of the bottle is iconic and looks good on your bar or when you pull it out at a party and the purple bag is a going to put a smile on faces when they see it. Crown Royal is also in the reboot of James Bond novels. The first book Carte Blanche by Jeffery Deaver has a young 007 drinking a newly created cocktail which is a variation of the Old Fashion. The Bond orders the following;

  • Double measure of Crown Royal
  • Half measure of Triple Sec
  • Two dashes of bitters
  • Serve on the rocks with twist of orange

Bond does not specify shaken or stirred but I prefer it stirred on a large block ice cube. I substitute Cointreau instead of Triple Sec as it adds a better and cleaner taste.

Crown Royal is well priced between $30 to $50 depending on where you shop in NYC.

Crown Royal Black

Name: Crown Royal Black

Color: Dark Brown

Nose: Wood, spice, herbs, vanilla, chocolate, orange

Taste: Wood, spice, sweet orange, vanilla

Review:

Crown Royal Black is a non-age stated Canadian Whiskey that is bottled at 45% abv which is slightly higher than the classic Crown Royal. The Black Label was released in 2010 and along with the different flavor profile it comes in a black felt bag instead of the classic purple bag.

Crown Royal was created in 1939 by Seagram’s to honor King George’s VI visit. The “Crown” is to honor the Royal Family (aka the Windsor Family). The whiskey was only available in Canada up until the 1960’s but was later released to the USA market. It is now the top selling Canadian Whiskey in America.

The taste of the Black is richer and deeper than the Classic. It is hard to identify the mash bill, but maybe I need more tasting experience with Canadian Whiskey. I was surprised how different it tastes and the difficulty I had with the nosing. The proof is 10% higher than the classic but that was not what was throwing me off for some reason. When I added ice the whiskey opened up more and I could detect the Crown baseline and the herbs, spices and caramel flavors.

Crown Black is good stuff. I would not say it is better than regular Crown, they just taste different. It looks good on my bar at home and would probably make a better Carte Blanche due to the higher proof and deeper flavor profile. Definity a good gift for the price and not to forget, everyone likes the Crown felt bag.

Priced around $45 and worth the money.

Lot No. 40 Canadian Rye Whisky

Name: Lot No. 40 Canadian Rye Whisky

Color: Gold Brown

Nose: Sweet, candy vanilla

Taste: Sharp burn, sweet finish, caramel, rye spice

Review:

Sometimes I forget about Canada. I don’t do it deliberately; I just forget them, but after trying Lot No.40 I will not do that anymore. Lot No. 40 Canadian Rye Whisky is a 100% unmalted rye gained in virgin oak barrels. Lot No. 40 is a 7th generation small batch pot still small batch receipt that is has no coloring.

Lot No. 40 is produced by Pernod- Ricard and is a revival of a discontinued whisky that saw its last production in the late 1990’s. It is named after a plot of land owned by a Joshua Booth who is one of the ancestors of Hiram Walker. Walker is an American who moved to Ontario, Canada and set up a massive distillery business in the 1800’s.

This whisky has a nice flavor and I would definitely enjoy it in my Old Fashions or Manhattans. If you haven’t yet tried increasing the quality of your whisky for cocktails I strongly recommend it. I realize people think, “What’s the point of spending the extra money?” I used to think the same way. The point is, it’s worth it for the taste! Enjoying a cocktail in the comfort of your own home with higher quality whisky is worth every penny.

Priced at around $50 and is good. I will be adding to my bar at home.

Three Fingers High Whiskey 12 Year Old

Name: Three Fingers High Whiskey 12 Year Old

Color: Yellow straw

Nose: Not much of a nose. Little spice, nutmeg, and cinnamon

Taste: Bull, rye, bitter, sherry finish

Review:

Three Fingers High Whiskey is a Canadian blended whiskey aged 12 years and finished in Amontillado and sherry casks. It is 100% rye, pot still distilled, and bottled at 80 proof.

There is not much online that I could find about the whiskey and there is probably a reason for it. Three Fingers is not a good whiskey. It may be sherry finished, but does not have any real taste or specific flavor profile.

It is boring, dull, no flavor and cheap tasting. Overall, it is shit.

Price around $45 and not worth the money.
