The Macallan 18 – Sherry Oak Cask (2022 release)

Name: The Macallan 18 – Sherry Oak Cask (2022 release)

Color: Dark Brown

Nose: Malt, light oak, vanilla, caramel, raisins

Taste: Malt, oak, raisins, orange zest

The Macallan Distillery is located in Craigellachie, Moray which is the Speyside region of Scotland. It was founded in 1824 and has numerous expressions and ages available starting at 8 years and up to 72 years. The prices range from $65 to $500,000 so check you bank account before you guy. The Macallan is one of those “gold standards” in scotch that people either know or are familiar with due to product placement.

The Macallan 18 Sherry Oak Cask is aged for the total years, undisturbed, in Oloroso sherry seasoned oak casks and then bottled at 43% abv. The description of the flavor profile on the box is spot on. The raisin, spice, oak, vanilla, etc. notes are on the nose and tongue. However, I did not get the ginger as stated on the bottle, it is probably just my taste buds. The smoothness of this whisky cannot be described in words. This is a true sipping whisky to be enjoyed for special occasions. My friend Sam kept saying, “it’s so smooth…” over and over with each glass by the wood fire. I can summarize by only saying that this whisky needs to be experienced. No words do it justice no matter who writes them or what influencer promotes Macallan 18.

Priced around $400 per bottle and worth it if it fits you budget.

The Macallan 18 – Sherry Oak Cask (2023 release)

Name: The Macallan 18 – Sherry Oak Cask (2023 release)

Color: Dark Brown

Nose: Malt, light oak, sherry, fruit, vanilla-caramel

Taste: Malt, oak, fruit-raisins, spice, cream finish

The Macallan Distillery is in Craigellachie, Moray which is the Speyside region of Scotland. It was founded in 1824 and has numerous expressions and ages available to purchase with ages starting at 8 years and up to 72 years. The price ranges are from $65 to $500,000. The Macallan is one of those “gold standards” in scotch that people either know or have heard of because of product placement in television, movies, and seeing it on the shelf.

The Macallan 18 – Sherry Oak Cask (2023) is aged “seasoned oak casks from Jerez Spain” and is then bottled at 43% abv. The label states it is natural colored, but no mention of non-chilled filtering. From my research I learned that the sherry casks were “seasoned” which can mean that the cask had sherry added to them to give them the sherry flavor. They might have not used actual sherry casks from Jerez. I am not able to confirm this from my research.

I would say, but cannot compare to the 2022 release that I reviewed last year, that the 2023 is slightly smoother, but little lower in quality. There is just something missing in the taste profile, but is still very good. I should have saved a dram of the 2022 to compare in 2023. I will be purchasing The Macallan 12 Sherry Cask finish and comparing them side by side.

This expression is a true sipping whisky to be enjoyed for special occasions like celebrating a 30-year friendship. My friend Sam was visiting, and we went right to work enjoying this expression.

Priced around $400 per bottle and worth it if it works with your budgets.

The Macallan 12

Name: The Macallan 12

Color: Light brown

Nose: Light oak and sherry

Taste: Medium bodied, sherry, orange citrus, sweet oak finish

As you can see from the picture, my former coworker is a very patient man. They say, “some things are worth waiting for”, personally, I had a bigger glass at my desk.

Macallan 12 is a very good and well-marketed brand of Scotch whisky. It is lighter in body and flavor which is easier to drink but a bad idea in a cocktail as the flavor will be lost among the mixers. If you would like to “up your Scotch game” or need arrive somewhere with a nicer bottle in your hand, Macallan 12 would be an excellent choice.

I always recommend Macallan 12 as an introduction Scotch for non-whisky drinkers due to the lighter flavor and balanced taste. The vast amount of whisky from Scotland can overwhelm you and you would not want to start out too strong or too complex in flavor such as Laphroaig or Dalmore.

Macallan 12 will be easier and more enjoyable on your palate as opposed to full-bodied whiskeys with ice or water.

Priced around $65+ and worth the money.

The Macallan Edition No. 3

Name: The Macallan Edition No. 3

Color: Brown

Nose: Oak, vanilla, orange

Taste: Fruits, sweetness, vanilla

Review:

The Macallan Edition No. 3 is one of the three releases from Macallan’s Special Editions Collection. This scotch was created in partnership with professional perfumer Roja Dove who used his skills to match smells that work with each other.

No. 3 is wood focused with the nose being a big part of the profile. The nose being a significant part of the creative process is no surprise with a perfumer consulting on its creation. But how will it taste?

No. 3 is a blend of 6 casks which are the following;

    1. 1st Fill American Oak Hudosa Butts
    2. 2nd Fill American/European Oak Refill Butts
    3. 1st Fill European Oak Tevasa Butts
    4. 1st Fill American Oak Bourbon
    5. 1st Fill European Oak Tevasa Hogheads
    6. 1st Fill American Bourbon Barrels

Each cask has a different flavor profile. I will spare you the details but the vanilla taste is clearly nose forward on this whisky. As you may already know, that comes from the bourbon barrels. Vanilla is a big thing with perfumers so I am not surprised by this but there was not much else in the flavor profile.

Over the last few years there have been various partnerships between distilleries and other people. Distilleries are partnering with chefs, musicians, movies, actors, artists, etc. to create new whisky’s. I want to believe it is a good thing but sometimes I feel it is marketing bullshit. It is like the distillery ran out of ideas and someone said, “Ummm why don’t we bring in {fill in the blank} to help us? Then we can market the shit out of this whisky!”

Ya, ok….fuck off with that.

I get distinct feeling that some whisky producers, even the big ones, are getting a bit desperate with the potential, and eventual slowdown in whisky interest. It has been 10 years since Mad Men aired and whisky became cool again. Now, in 2018 distilleries need to create new products that do not have a historical romantic story so a partnership with someone cool helps them sell.

It should be noted that Macallan has two other “Editions”. No.1 is made from eight casks and not partnered with anyone cool. No. 2 is sherry styled and created with some famous Spanish Chefs. Sherry influenced whisky from Spain….no shit?

Priced around $100 it is good, but I am not a huge fan for the flavor or the price. Let’s see how long it lasts on the store shelves.

The Macallan Double Cask 12 Year Old

Name: The Macallan Double Cask 12 Year Old

Color: Gold Amber

Nose: Dried fruit, sherry, light wood

Taste: Citrus, sherry, marzipan

Review:

Macallan Double Cask may sound like it is a cask strength whisky from the word “Double” in the title but what it means is that two barrels where used for this scotch. Macallan has matured this whisky in New American Oak barrels that are shipped to Spain for use in Sherry. After the barrels are finished serving in the Sherry production they are then sent to the distillery in the Highlands of Scotland, filled with whisky, and left to mature for 12 years.

The Double Cask is a sweet whisky with a medium bodied and has a smooth finish. In comparison, it is a bit sweeter with less wood than The Macallan 12 Year Old.

I will say this; I like this scotch more than several of Macallan’s other whiskeys, BUT it can be too sweet after a couple of drams. I find it can be similar to some Bourbons where once the bottle is open it goes down like spring water. Just a heads up!

This is a great Scotch for people that like a sweeter taste in their whisky, if you are more of a Bourbon person, or want to enjoy Scotch outside in the warm weather.

Very well priced around $60.

The Macallan 18 (2018 release)

Name: The Macallan 18 (2018 release)

Color: Amber brown

Nose: Vanilla, cinnamon, light citrus fruit

Taste: Spice orange, light wood and smoke

I received this bottle as a gift and it was a very good gift indeed! I have had this whisky before in the half bottle version to celebrate a coworker’s first-born child and I carefully rationed it out at the office. My coworkers all had the same look on their faces of satisfaction upon tasting, however, I had the look of “Chris, next time you are on the way home from happy hour do not stop by the liquor store on 37th & 3rd.” The whisky evaporated within 5 minutes, but it was worth it.

Macallan 18 is a wonderful Scotch, well balanced, and has a delicious taste and finish. It is for sipping, not slugging and at 18 years old it comes at a higher cost than other Macallan’s. I feel it is worth the price, but it is slightly out of my comfort price zone. Personally, I would prefer spend the money on 2-3 bottles ranging from $75-115 each. Committing so much money to one bottle is hard for me when I want to experience various tastes each time I open up my bar.

I recommend this one for special celebrations or treating yourself.

Price around: Half Bottle at $130.00 and Full Bottle from $225.00-260.00.

The Macallan Rare Cask

Name: The Macallan Rare Cask

Color: Amber Brown

Nose: Dried fruit, wood, dark chocolate

Taste: Burnt wood, iodine, dark dried fruit, and a medicine flavor

Review:

I will be as straight forward as I can be; this scotch is far too expensive for the taste.

Macallan Rare Cask is a non-aged statement single malt finish in Sherry casks (sort of) and the flavor is not impressive. Sherry casks are very popular in Scotch and I can think of several that half the price and better in flavor.

I sampled the Macallan Rare in January at the Astor Centers Robbie Burns Tasting and last night at Whisky Live NYC at Chelsea Pier 60.

What comes to mind with this whisky is “What are you paying for when you buy a bottle?” For me, I am paying for flavor. Everything else after flavor is an addition or subtraction to the whisky. When it comes to Rare, I feel I am paying for a fancy box and the marketing/PR work to promote the scotch. (I stole it from the trash bin for the pic)

My motto is “If you like it, drink it”, but price always needs to be considered along with taste and price is the heart of all my reviews. If price is not an issue for you and you need to give a high-end scotch in a fancy box this would be a good choice for the wow factor but not for the flavor factor.

Approximately $300.00 per bottle or $75 per glass in NYC area. Your call…

If you like it, drink it!
